After FREN’s success with their PICU/PACU units, the Sacred Heart Hospital of Pensacola invited us back to work on their new Pediatric Hematology/Oncology unit. This unit would be a lot different as it would see a lot more long-term patients and thus included its own playroom as well as a movie room/infusion bay. We decided to keep the theme of the deep dive, but to include more environments, stretching from the shoreline at the entrance/playroom, dipping into the reef and open ocean for the private rooms, and taking a submarine ride into the mysterious abyssal deep for the movie room.

This project repeated a lot of the features from the previous one with the digital screens, AR app, and animated wildlife, but we included completely new and distinct environments as well as sea creatures for these areas. The submarine is probably the most interesting feature with its exterior view lining up with the door when in the hallway and a completely interior with all of the gadgets and gizmos when viewed from within. With its color changing mood lighting and projector screen, the movie room can be used to view any movie the patients or staff may want, or it can simulate a submarine voyage through the dark abyssal waters. Abyssal scenery was interesting to adapt for the space since in reality it can really seem alien and scary, but with the right color palette and a smile on every frogfish, it can make for a really whimsical and unique environment!
